Recycling Programs at Retail Stores
As consumers, we shop at a variety of stores and retail shops every day. Did you know that local and national stores and chains offer free recycling programs for many different items? The next time you're out running errands and buying a few new things at these stores, plan on dropping your recycling off too.
Nationally, Best Buy stores will recycle just about any electronics device, including TVs, DVD players, computer monitors, audio and video cables, cell phones, and more. The program is an in-store solution for customers to bring their old, unused, or unwanted consumer electronics — no matter where they were purchased — for responsible recycling. Do you have Crocs™ shoes that you are not wearing anymore and would like to donate? Crocs, Inc. and Soles4Souls have developed a program, which provides the opportunity to recycle your Crocs™. Locally, drop off gently-used Crocs at stores located in Aurora, Beachwood and Strongsville.
Customers can return their plastic grocery bags to any corporate store, and when combined with film plastic collected from store operations, the bags will be recycled into composite building materials.
Giant Eagle also has eWaste collection bins for customers to donate used ink cartridges, cellphones, MP3 players, Digital Cameras and GPS devices for responsible recycling. Giant Eagle donates 100% proceeds from the profits generated to local food banks. Beginning February 2013, fashion retailer H&M began collecting used clothes at its stores worldwide to be recycled. The company accepts clothing from any brand in any condition. The retailer will give shoppers vouchers for future H&M purchases.
Collected clothes will be handled by I:Collect, a global recycling company, which would transport them to a sorting plant in Germany. The material could then either be re-used as clothes or for other products like cleaning rags or insulation material in the car industry. Locally, H&M stores are located at malls in Beachwood, Mentor, North Olmsted, Strongsville and Westlake.
The Home Depot offers recycling programs for rechargeable batteries, CFLs and Christmas lighting. The recycling centers are usually located near the entrance to the store or by the Returns desk.
JCPenney accepts plastic bags at kiosks near the store entrances.
Lowe’s has permanent recycling centers, located at the store entrance, that offer a free, convenient and easy way for customers to recycle rechargeable batteries, cell phones, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and plastic shopping bags.
In addition, the company offers seasonal collection programs. Customers can now drop off plastic plant trays, pots and tags for recycling at any Lowe's Garden Center in the continental United States and some stores offer holiday lights recycling during the winter months. The Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program collects old, worn-out athletic shoes for recycling and transforms them into Nike Grind, a material used in creating athletic and playground surfaces as well as select Nike products. The program has collected 28 million shoes for recycling since 1990. In 2008, Nike placed Reuse-A-Shoe bins in all of its U.S. retail stores. Locally, shoes can be recycled at the Nike Factory Store in Aurora. Find another store.
Sam’s Club, in partnership with ecoNEW, offers an electronics trade-in and recycle program at http://recycling.econewonline.com/samsclub Simply enter information about the item being traded in to determine the value, and a prepaid shipping label is produced. After the item is received and verified, the customer receives a gift card for the designated value.
Sam's Club also accepts plastic bags.
Bring in your old office technology products to your local Staples and they will responsibly and securely recycle the items at no cost — any brand, any condition, even if you purchased it somewhere else. Thanks to recycling stations found at the entrance to every store, guests can now easily recycle cans, glass plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones during their trips to Target.
Verizon Wireless helps the environment by providing a safe way to dispose of unwanted electronic devices. Verizon accepts cell phones and tablets of any make and model from any carrier. The company provides an incentive to recycle by providing a gift card for each donation.
Through the Samsung Recycling Direct program, Walmart customers can recycle Samsung consumer electronics, as well as those from our former private brands, Durabrand and Ilo, for free at numerous drop-off locations in all 50 states. Other brands are accepted for a nominal fee. Walmart also has in-store recycling bins for all types of plastic shopping bags.
Walmart.com has teamed up with CExchange to power an Electronics Trade-In Program. The innovative partnership will enable Walmart.com customers to earn an eGift Card good at Walmart.com by responsibly trading in their used electronics, including cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, digital cameras, and more at walmart.cexchange.com. The process is fairly easy, and qualifying items ship for free.
Walmart has partnered with Polygroup to recycle Christmas lights, extension cords, and artificial trees (un-lit and pre-lit). Items can be shipped to the Polygroup processing facility in Idaho.
