National recycling contests and special collection programs

There are great national recycling contests offered. Join one and earn a chance for prize money and bragging rights.  Sign up dates vary.  Let's increase recycling rates and help Northeast Ohio Schools lead the State of Ohio and the nation in recycling.

The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District will help by educating your school and the school community about recycling.  If you are interested in participating in one of these national programs, contact the District's Education Specialist at (216) 443-3731.

Recycle-Bowl Competition

Recycle-Bowl Competition is promoted by Keep American Beautiful (KAB). It is a free, friendly competition and benchmarking tool for K-12 school recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities. School recycling programs across the nation compete in a race to collect the most recyclables. A school will choose one categories to compete in either the State School Competition or National Community School Drop-off Competition.

Schools need to keep track of the weight of the recyclables. All accepted items that your recycler collects as part of your standard service contract can be included in recycle numbers. Register the school by October 15.  A teacher, principal or authorized representative (an “Authorized Representative”) from an eligible school may enter the school in the Competition. For more information or to register, visit http://recycle-bowl.org/.

Contest starts in early August.

Pepsico Recycle Rally™

The Recycle Rally™ is an exciting program that aims to raise awareness of the importance of recycling. The goal of the program and for schools is to capture beverage containers (plastic bottles and aluminum cans) that would not otherwise be recycled. Northeast Ohio schools are eligible to participate, since we're a non bottle bill state. This is a great hands-on program that schools will earn rewards and compete for contest prizes.

If you are a parent or student who is interested in having your school participate, be sure to reach out to a teacher or an administrator to have them apply for the program www.dreammachinerecyclerally.com. Fall means football and tailgating, so it's a great time of year to capture used water and soda pop bottles.

Contest starts early September.

Great American Can Roundup School Challenge

"Al the Can" extends an invitation to your school to earn money, recycle and party.  Registration is now open through December 15 at www.cancentral.com.  During their inaugural event, schools recycled over 2.3 million cans, raising more than $34,000 in Great American Can Roundup School Challenge.  We encourage you to challenge your school to see how many beverage cans they can recycle per student between America Recycles Day (November 15) and Earth Day (April 22).  It's an extraordinary opportunity for schools to show their true green spirit and environmental leadership by stepping up to the Great American Can Roundup School Recycling Challenge.

Put your school in contention by going to www.cancentral.com/RoundUp and register by December 15 to be eligible for the School Recycling Challenge.  There you will find everything needed to build recycling enthusiasm and rally the community for the win.

We look forward to seeing your schools on the Great American Can Roundup School Challenge leader board.  For questions, contact Jenny Day at (202) 232-4677 or by email [email protected].

Contest runs from November-April.
