Special Waste Collections
The following special waste collection events and services are available to residents of Cuyahoga County:
Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program
A program to collect and properly dispose of oil-based paint products, pesticides, garden chemicals and other hazardous wastes found in the home. Residents can dispose of HHW items through their city service department.
Recycle Your Computer Month
An event promoted twice a year, usually in the spring and the fall, to collect and recycle unwanted household computer equipment. Computers are collected from residents by city service departments and recycled by RET3 job corp., a local non-profit organization.
Phone Book Recycling Campaign
An annual phone book recycling drive held each summer when the new phone books are delivered. Residents and businesses may turn in old phone books at twelve Cleveland Metroparks locations.
Scrap Tire Round-Up
An annual program to collect and recycle scrap tires that communities collect from residents or remove from illegal dump sites. This Round-Up is held in city service departments each September.
Political Yard Sign Recycling
For two weeks following both the primary and general elections, residents are invited to drop-off plastic and cardboard campaign signs plus the metal stands at the District's facility in Garfield Heights. Local ward clubs and city service departments may also have a drop-off in the community.
Holiday Lights Collection
From November-January, the Solid Waste District accepts strings of holiday lights, power cords and power strips for recycling. The lights are put through a large commercial shredder and separated by commodity for recycling. A drop-off bin is located in our buliding lobby in Garfield Heights. Some city service departments collecte lights for residents as part of this program.
Mercury Collection Program
A disposal program to collect household mercury items from the public. Residents may turn in mercury items at four locations in Cuyahoga County.
Compost Seminars & Bin Sales
Learn how to properly compost organic materials in your backyard. Purchase a compost bin to keep your pile contained.
Recycling Information and Assistance
Free recycling and waste management information for residents and businesses through the District's hotline (216) 443-3749. Speakers, printed materials, and site visits also available.
Recycling Presentations
Free recycling presentations for schools, civic groups, senior centers, business organizations. Our waste management professionals can tailor a talk to meet your specific audience and interests.
Children’s Education Programs
Environmental educator provides free classroom presentations, teacher workshops, classroom materials, field trips, a student newsletter and environmental curriculum to teach children about recycling.
