National
Recycle-Bowl Competition
Recycle-Bowl Competition is promoted by Keep American Beautiful (KAB). It is a free, friendly competition and benchmarking tool for K-12 school recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities. School recycling programs across the nation compete in a race to collect the most recyclables. A school will choose one categories to compete in either the State School Competition or National Community School Drop-off Competition.
Schools need to keep track of the weight of the recyclables. All accepted items that your recycler collects as part of your standard service contract can be included in recycle numbers. Register the school by October 8, 2012, but do it early because the first 1,000 schools will receive a toolkit (Recycle-Bowl competition posters, a Recycle-Bowl t-shirt, recycling material to hang up in your cafeteria, a recycling book for your library (elementary schools only) and a lesson plan guide (high schools and middles schools only). A teacher, principal or authorized representative (an “Authorized Representative”) from an eligible school may enter the school in the Competition, but don't delay registration started in early August at http://recycle-bowl.org/.
The contest runs from October 175th - November 10th. State champions could win $1,000 based on the most recycled material per person per school, and a chance for America’s Top Recycling School with a grand prize of an additional $2,500 will go to the top performer among the State Champions! For the Community School Drop-off division, prizes will include a first-place $1,000 prize, a second-place $750 prize and a third-place $500 prize.
Dream Machine Recycle Rally™
The Recycle Rally™ is an exciting program that aims to raise awareness of the importance of recycling. The goal of the program and for schools is to capture beverage containers (plastic bottles and aluminum cans) that would not otherwise be recycled. Northeast Ohio schools are eligible to participate, since we're a non bottle bill state. This is a great hand's-on program that schools will earn rewards and compete for contest prizes. This is a multi-year collaboration from August 2012 to May 2013 between schools, PepsiCo, Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful.
It works by students collecting non-alcoholic beverage containers and bringing them into school. A bar code system with a lap top keeps track of each school's recycling efforts. If you are a parent or student who is interested in having your school participate, be sure to reach out to a teacher or an administrator to have them apply for the program www.dreammachinerecyclerally.com.
Top 50 schools in the country win prize money of $500 - $5,000 and the eligible school with highest totals will win $25,000 or $50,000 for "Green Improvements".
It's tailgate and football season, so capture those used water and soda pop bottles.
Great American Can Roundup School Challenge
"Al the Can" extends an invitation to your school to earn money, recycle and party. Registration is now open through December 15 at www.cancentral.com. During our inaugural event, schools recycled over 2.3 million cans, raising more than $34,000 in Great American Can Roundup School Challenge. Expedition Academy in Green River, Wyoming not only was number one recycling school in the state, but continues to celebrate as the national winner. We encourage you to challenge your school to see how many beverage cans they can recycle per student between America Recycles Day (November 15) and Earth Day (April 22), 2012. It's an extraordinary opportunity for schools to show their true green spirit and environmental leadership by stepping up to the Great American Can Roundup School Recycling Challenge.
The Can Manufacturers Institute, the national trade association of can manufacturers and their suppliers, is giving away a $1,000 per state to the top per capita school and an additional $5,000 to the top recycling school for a total of $56,000. Your school could win up to $6,000, plus the value of the cans and the chance to win $50 pizza cards. Put your school in contention by going to www.cancentral.com/RoundUp and register by December 15 to be eligible for the School Recycling Challenge. There you will find everything needed to build recycling enthusiasm and rally the community for the win.
At www.cancentral.com/RoundUp you will be able to compare your schools' recycling progress. Environmental educators will also appreciate grade appropriate, free interdisciplinary curricula and worksheets for the classroom to continue the discussion of the positive impact on the environment through aluminum can recycling.
We look forward to seeing your schools on the Great American Can Roundup School Challenge leader board. Please contact Jenny Day at 202/232-4677, or by email [email protected] with any questions or ways we can help.
