Materials: Clean trash: cans, milk cartons, milk jugs, egg cartons, plastic containers, cardboard tubes, string, paper, paper cup, etc... Paint paintbrushes, markers, glue, tape, newspaper, paper mache paste, science journals and scale.
Vocabulary: Reuse
Procedures:

- Discuss that each person throw away about 5 pounds of trash per day. How can people limit what they throw away? By creating art work from trash, we will reuse waste items.
- Show examples of what student could make and share what trash items and materials. Items can be sculptures or useful such as a pencil holder and flower vase.
- Students should record the trash items they used in their project.
Time: one class period
Conclusion: Have them weight their projects to determine the amount of trash they prevented from going to the landfill.
Followup: Have students write poetry or creative stories about their new creations and share their creations with the class.
