GLASS
Refers to glass bottles and jars in brown, clear, and green colors. To recycle glass containers,
rinse well and remove all lids, caps and rings. Other types of glass such as drinking glasses,
window glass, mirrors and light bulbs cannot be recycled due to the physical properties of the
product.
PLASTICS
Most communities in Cuyahoga County recycle plastic containers which have a (1) or (2) symbol
on the bottom of the container. These include PET pop bottles marked with a (1) symbol and
opaque HDPE milk, water, and juice jugs marked with a (2) symbol. Some cities also accept
colored detergent and bleach containers marked with a (2) symbol. Please call your city to find
out which containers are acceptable since including the wrong type of plastic can hurt your city's
recycling program. Plastic containers should be rinsed and the lids removed before recycling.
NEWSPAPER
Clean, dry newspaper should be stacked in paper bags or bundled with string. In most cities, the
newspaper inserts can also be included.
MAGAZINES
Glossy coated magazines and catalogs are now recycled in some communities along with junk mail
and boxboard such as cereal boxes. Wax coated boxes such as frozen food containers and milk cartons
cannot be recycled and should not be mixed with these items.
CARDBOARD
Refers to corrugated cardboard only. Cardboard boxes should be flattened.
APPLIANCES
Large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, hot water tanks etc. Some cities
require residents to have appliances containing refrigerant removed by a certified technician. A list
of these technicians is available from the County Solid Waste District at 443-3749.
MOTOR OIL
Drain into a clean container with a sealable lid. Do not mix with gasoline or other automotive
products.
