The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District is interested in working with schools on strategies to increase paper recycling in their Paper Retriever bin. This will be a joint project between the school and the Solid Waste District.
The Solid Waste District will provide flyers that can be used by the school to promote recycling. A class, environmental club or parent group can take the lead on the project.
A school interested in the project should:
-
Have an Abitibi Paper Retriever bin.
-
Be motivated to increase paper recycling.
-
Set up a meeting with the Solid Waste District’s Education Specialist.
-
Involve students that will brainstorm and implement several paper recycling strategies that extend beyond the school community.
The first five schools to agree to participate will receive cardboard paper recycling boxes for their classrooms. Any school that participates will be given additional promotional items for your students from pencils, rulers, ribbons to tattoos.

Participating schools and their efforts would be highlighted on the District’s website. Successful strategies will be shared with all schools in Cuyahoga County to increase paper recycling. The Solid Waste District would like to demonstrate with student based marketing how all schools can recycle over 35 tons of paper to earn $500.00. Please contact Kathleen at 216-443-3731.
The reasoning behind this program:
In 2005, 15 out of 136 schools in Cuyahoga County earned over $1,000 through paper recycling. That is 11% of the schools with Abitibi Paper Retriever bins. Only 22% of the schools earned over $500.00. Many schools and their surrounding community could recycle more, thus earning fundraising dollars for the school. Through promoting paper recycling beyond the school community would be a win for the environment and a win for the school.
